Newsmakers: Vermont's finest draws more raves

In the October issue of Bon Appetit, Williston resident, cooking teacher and award-winning cookbook author Molly Stevens was named cooking teacher of the year as part of the magazine's 10th Annual Awards. The magazine praised, "Molly Stevens has a knack for simplicity ... her simple, flavorful recipes guarantee success."

Although Stevens doesn't teach much in her home state, having one of her cookbooks, such as "All About Braising: The Art of Uncomplicated Cooking," will deliver her clear approach right into your home kitchen.

The October issue of Gourmet featured two Vermont venues among its 100 best farm-to-table restaurants in America: Waterbury's Hen of the Wood -- where "Chefs Eric Warnstedt and Craig Tresser seek out premium ingredients, both foraged and farmed, then prepare them in ways that coax out maximum flavor," and the seasonal Inn at Shelburne Farms restaurant -- where chef Rick Gencarelli "professes a fondness for buying whole animal carcasses, breaking them down himself, and using every part, saying it makes him a better cook."

Hen of the Wood received another highlight in the December issue of Food & Wine, earning a coveted spot in the magazine's feature on the 10 best restaurant dishes of 2007 for its duck with mustard spaetzle.

Again, someone has to co-sign so that would be...parents, probably.

Instability in work tends to feed instability in relationships (stress, relocation, repeated unemployment) which means the old way of a young couple working together over time to get established is also missing or fragile. Add 25k debt load for those who bought into the post-secondary education imperative - the sense that it is possible to get ahead on your own steam is definitely in jeopardy.

It's true young people probably benefit from a bit of struggle but a quadruple whammy of job instability, the breakdown of the family, frequent relocation, and real estate speculation is new. Younger people need all the help they can get. Posted 12/02/08 at 2:48 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Sir Aynsley-Green is also concerned about the ringtones, as he is worried they may pose a disruption to the learning process. The battle over the Mosquito marks the latest controversy for the British government. It also marks an interesting new high-tech chapter in Britain's "youth v. adult" mentality, which powerfully influenced rock music and counter-culture movements of the twentieth century. And like the rock movement, what starts in Britain quickly invades the U.S., for better or worse. .

Ask Lisa - Yeast rolls

Q: My mom made wonderful yeast rolls. I'm tempted to try and was looking at the recipe, which calls for letting the dough rise twice before shaping it into rolls, and then baking. I could swear, though, that Mom used to let the shaped rolls rise before putting them into the oven. Could I have made a mistake in writing down her recipe? Would it make more sense to let the dough rise once, punch it down, shape it and then let it rise again? Mom's no longer around to ask, so I'm counting on you to instruct me.

β€” M.B., Brecksville A: I say trust your memory and not your recipe. Most breads call for two rises β€” the second of which comes after the bread is shaped.

It's possible your mom's recipe had three rises, but not likely. Even in the case of a three-rise bread, one would come after shaping.

Communities have growing rep for organic gardening

It's hard to pick just one [as my favorite], as much as I love ice cream and wine, I'd be most interested in Bee Heaven Farm,'' Meyer said.

Bee Heaven sells at the Pinecrest farmers' market every Sunday.

The farm also has led the way in ''subscription farming,'' in which consumers agree in advance to pay for a share of produce usually delivered every week, said Dr. Mary Lamberts, vegetable agent for the University of Florida/Miami-Dade County Extension office.

''You're paying for the vegetables up front,'' Lamberts said. If the farmer ''has crop failure you are part of the crop failure -- you have taken the gamble'' with the grower, Lamberts added.

Indeed, gardening in the tropics can be a challenge because of insects.

''In our part of the world [New York], the insects are dead right now, but in your part of the world, they keep getting bigger and bigger -- they never die,'' Meyer said.

Xenophobe: Warrior Princess

The Settlement Agreement marks the success of that journey.

The Settlement is symbolic. It is a symbolic offering from Canada which acknowledges the harm done to survivors of Indian residential schools and how very wrong it was to inflict that harm. It is not a government handout – far from it - …it is an admission of wrong doing and an attempt to make amends.

A Lone Chef, But Not a Lonely One, At Home and Abroad

I lived in the spare room of a Parisian family's apartment for the majority of the fall semester, and though I had a number of reasons for wanting to leave, being unable to cook for myself was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The family's apartment was immense and elegant, in a neighborhood that has been described as the Upper East Side of Paris, but I was far from comfortable there. I felt like an intruder in the home of my host family, which expressed no interest in getting to know me and went days without speaking to me. When I was at the apartment, I burrowed away in my room, trying in vain to ignore the parents' latest screaming match on the other side of my thin bedroom wall.

But the thing that made it truly unbearable was not being able to cook. I had been told I would have access to the kitchen to prepare meals on the four nights a week that I wasn't eating with the family.
