| Turkey Frying: A Generation of 'Frequent Fryers'
COLUMBUS, Ga., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Turkey frying has long been viewed as a staple of Southern tradition, however, results from The Big Easy Survey by Char-Broil -- released this week -- reveal that two-thirds (64%) of Americans have fried a turkey or know someone who has. In spite of the fact that Americans across the nation are jumping on the turkey frying bandwagon, they are doing so for different reasons in different regions. Frying Across America No matter what part of the country, an overall awareness of turkey frying is changing the way Americans are preparing for Thanksgiving. The survey findings underscore the growing popularity of this historically Southern fare, especially in regions outside of the South. Northern turkey fryers are more likely than other Americans to fry a turkey when they want to impress their guests (10% vs.

It's the hottest time of the year for spicy, saucy wings
The way Michael Deary sees it, when you're a football fan, you gotta wing it. On game days, you can smell the excitement in Deary's Elk Grove, Calif., kitchen as he starts frying up his Buffalo wings early so he'll have a big pile for friends and family to tackle by kickoff. "I'm a fanatic about them," says the longtime Raiders fan. "My friends come over, and they're like, 'You're cooking wings at 8 in the morning?'" Wings have found a winning teammate in football -- with wing consumption peaking on Super Bowl weekend. Last year, more than 1 billion wing servings flew into the sunset and into human gullets during the big game weekend, the National Chicken Council reports. DK Images Launch Discover - the New Database for Searching Imagery ...
DK Images, the image encyclopedia, has just launched Discover, a new image database allowing users to search for pictures online. The new DK Images Discover function enables user to search through over a million images including 70,000 artworks and photographs from 180 photographers on the DK Image gallery, which has been termed an image encyclopedia on account of its design and depth of subject coverage. Users can search the free database by category, such as animals, history or sports, and will then find more detailed subcategories offering further choice; for example in the food and drink category, users can choose from subcategories such as breads, cooking and national cuisines. Clicking on breads then pulls up a further choice of subcategories such as croissants, dough and French bread for example.
Fraud Roshambo: Paper Beats RFID
Fingerprints aren't just for fingers anymore. Now, they could be an important new tool for fighting document forgery. All paper, as well as plastic credit and debit cards, bears a unique "fingerprint" of microscopic surface imperfections. According to Russell Cowburn, professor of nanotechnology at Imperial College London, detecting these unique patterns is easy to do with a portable laser scanner. And it's cheap, too: "Our field scanners could be manufactured for $1,000 or less (when made) in volume," said Cowburn. The detection process makes use of the optical phenomenon known as laser speckle. Light coming from a focused laser is coherent, or in phase, but when it strikes a microscopically rough surface like a piece of paper, the light is scattered, producing a pattern of light and dark "speckles." The scanner's photodetectors digitize and record this pattern.
Radio & TV Talk
Season four begins Sept. 27. I finally caught up with the Sunday finale of "Big Love" on HBO. The show has improved markedly from season one, although how Bill manages to keep his Home Depot-like business going with the leaks of his polygamy getting out there is beyond me. And it's amazing the neighbors haven't figured it out yet and that Barb had to tell one of them forthright. But I love Margene; she has definitely grown as a character as she pushes the limits of her position as the "third" wife. I'm looking forward to season three in 2008. And the New York Times finally gets around to reviewing BET's "We Got To Do Better" AKA Hot Ghetto Mess. As is typical of the paper when it comes to reviews, the Times doesn't totally slam the show but isn't terribly complimentary either.
Relish The American Table:Give these nest eggs a break
Thirty years ago, a recipe for eggs in spinach nests might have had a hard time making it to print. Because of their cholesterol content, eggs were considered a health risk and were taken a beating in the press. By the time the dust settled, it turned out that eggs might not be as troublesome as once believed, and anyone who loved eggs felt a sense of culinary relief. Nutrition experts now say there is a place in healthy diets for all foods, including eggs. The trick is to not focus on a single food but to strive for variety and moderation. And so, egg consumption, which had fallen to a record low in 1991, rebounded and continues to rise.Sometimes called "nature's perfect food," eggs are an inexpensive source of quality protein and an important source of vitamins and minerals. One egg has 212 milligrams of cholesterol, but less than two grams of saturated fat (primarily found in meat and cheeses) the real culprit for increasing the risk of heart disease.

How Gordon Brown undid a year's work in seven fatal days
One is that he planned to fight it on decisiveness and competence. From my conversations with people at the very highest levels of government, I never got the impression that Mr Brown had ever convinced himself that he should risk the premiership he had waited for so long on an early election. In private conversation, he had been dismissive of the idea in July and remained highly cautious even when his poll ratings went stratospheric. He was clearly trying to destabilise the Tories, though the threat had the opposite effect, rallying them at their conference, muzzling the doubters about David Cameron and galvanising him and George Osborne. The other reason Gordon Brown had not announced a decision was because, well, he had not made a decision. He is far from alone among politicians - in fact, he is utterly typical - in his reluctance to make decisions before he absolutely has to.
