| Let foodie films inspire Oscar fete
If you're like millions of film fans, you'll tune in to the Academy Awards ceremony Sunday. But why watch the festivities alone? Instead, invite a few movie-loving friends to enjoy the red-carpet spectacular with you. Oscar night is a great excuse to give a party. An Oscar night party is easy to host. The entertainment is simple. Just keep the TV tuned to the merriment all night, raising or lowering the volume at your favorite spots. The rest of the party planning is straightforward, too. Let your favorite flicks inspire the food and drink. You might theme the evening's meal after "American Gangster" and serve soul food, or go with classic '70s hors d'oeuvres and a martini tasting for "Charlie Wilson's War." Cowboy favorites such as baked beans and barbecue pairs well with this year's movies set in the West, such as "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men." If you're a perfectionist, like the therapy-needing chef played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in "No Reservations," create a hopelessly complicated, flawlessly prepared buffet.
U.S. economy's downturn has minimal impact on local firms
With the U.S. economy slowing, more consumers are cooking at home to save money. And that's a good thing for Pittsburgh food giant H.J. Heinz Co., which does more business through grocery stores than restaurants. Heinz's overall results held up in its most recent quarter, even though food service operating income dipped. "Heinz is having a record year, so we are not seeing a significant impact as a result of any economic slowdown," said Michael Mullen, director of global corporate affairs. Despite all the talk of an impending U.S. recession, some of the biggest employers and companies in southwestern Pennsylvania are reporting no major fallout yet from the recent downturn, nor do they expect to freeze new hiring or capital expenditures. Many are citing a surge in demand from outside the United States as a reason for optimism.

Hugh, what a stinker - it's the lamest show on earth
The other thing missing from Nine's publicity was the dreaded M-word: musical. As in Blackpool, the characters break into song. However, they do so with an astonishing lack of conviction. Like very bad karaoke, they warble along apologetically as the original songs play loudly in the background. Owen's casting is inexplicable. Not only is his American accent poor, he has a very ordinary singing voice. And the less said about Melanie Griffith's performance the better. How did the US network CBS get this so wrong? One can only imagine its executives were looking for something quirky, in keeping with the trend for offbeat dramas (think Heroes, Ugly Betty, Life, Desperate Housewives). But they clearly lacked the courage of their convictions. Viva Laughlin has the fingerprints of nervous network executives all over it.
Did I really hear this....
He has produced highlight videos, post game interviews and audio slide shows for both sports. And, of course, he edited every sports story The Evergreen published during his time as copy chief and editor-in-chief. In his new role, he'll provide traditional written sports coverage out of Pullman. Furthermore, he'll also help grow our hugely popular Cougar sports blogs and build additional online and multimedia content. Please join me in congratulating Nick. I'll leave it to Joe Palmquist and Addy Hatch to work out a start date. I know Addy must have time to fill the night cops position. Once he starts, Nick will shadow Vince Grippi through basketball season (Vince takes the lead on basketball as compensation for suffering through football) and then take over the beat in the spring.
QCs warn Scots justice in crisis
I suspect the more immediate problem, for New Labour, will be a possible change in administration and that could well bring about just such a public enquiry, regardless of the best efforts of New Labour to prevent it at all costs. Watch this space: www.nhsfirst.org.uk .

Those areas are not very sexy, but have a large impact on public health. The stem cell issue may end up like breast cancer, but with its own color ribbon. Lots of money will be spent with little reduction in the leading causes of death and sickness. Speaking of public funds for stem-cell research, you can find out the latest on California's Institute of Regenerative Medicine (funded by voter-approved Prop. 71 in Nov. 2004) here.
